Which Practices Are Right For Me?

Here is a brief description of what to expect at the different practices to help you choose which practices are most suited to your goals and skill level. If you have any questions about which practices would be best for you, talk with Coach Don.

Monday/Weds "Race Development"

Choose these practices if any of the following apply:

  1. You are new to the sport of outrigger.
  2. You would like to polish some of your skills (eg: steering) to participate in the "Competitive" practices (see below).
  3. You just want to come out and enjoy a paddle.
  4. You would like to race on a Novice or Recreational team.
Tuesday/Thursday early morning "Open"

Choose these practices if you are motivated to come out at that early hour.

Tuesday/Thursday "Race"

Choose these practices if all of the following apply: (Note that these are no longer "Men's" and "Women's" - both practices will be co-ed.)

  1. You are training to compete, and have made a commitment to regular time trials and consistent practice attendance as part of your training.
  2. You are prepared to work hard during practice - no apologies, no excuses, you will sweat!
  3. You are able to sit in any seat in any boat - from stroke to steers person in an OC-6, as well as small boats.
  4. You are willing and able to take on your share of supervising Monday/Weds practices and/or teaching introductory classes.
Friday Fun Night

This is a night for fun races open to all paddlers. There may be an emphasis on short (sprint-y) races this year. Bring dry clothes - we often go out for refreshments after practice.

Sunday Long Distance

Just what it says - be prepared to work hard and to go out for a long paddle. The length of this practice increases as the season progresses. Bring dry clothes - we often go out for a well-deserved breakfast after practice.

Our Fleet
We are very happy this year to have acquired a third OC-6 (six person) outrigger. We also have a number of one and two person outriggers.
