Penticton Racing Canoe Club (PRCC) sent a mixed crew to the Jericho Outrigger race in Vancouver this past weekend. The event was hosted out of the Jericho Sailing Club on English Bay, near UBC. The crew, consisting of Lynn Redmond, Bryn White, Launa Maundrell, Don Mulhall, Brad Lee and steered by Ron Pronger placed 2nd in the masters division, finishing 3rd overall in the mixed event. “The conditions were much bigger than I’ve seen at this race”, said Lynn Redmond, “the waves were so big – one minute I’d be paddling in mid air, the next I’d be almost under water trying to paddle”. 49 crews raced in the 6 man canoes on saturday – with men’s, women’s, mixed and a novice race.
Sunday’s small boat races at the same venue saw only slightly smaller wave conditions. “On a scale of 1 to 10, if saturday was an 11, sunday was a 10 – meaning it was big, but not scare the pants off you big for being out there in a one-man canoe”, said Don Mulhall. Mulhall placed 2nd in the Senior Masters division with a time of 1 hour 2 minutes and 12 seconds, with only 11 seconds separating the top 3 finishers in the category. With 77 small boats on the start line for the race, the fastest time of the day was set by Shane Martin of Vancouver at 58:03.
