Penticton Racing Canoe Club (PRCC) sent a mixed crew to the Jericho Outrigger race in Vancouver this past weekend. The event was hosted out of the Jericho Sailing Club on English Bay, near UBC. The crew, consisting of Lynn Redmond, Bryn White, Launa Maundrell, Don Mulhall, Brad Lee and steered by Ron Pronger placed 2nd in the masters division, finishing 3rd overall in the mixed event. "The conditions were much bigger than I've seen at this race", said Lynn Redmond, "the waves were so big - one minute I'd be paddling in mid air, the next I'd be almost under water trying to paddle". 49 crews raced in the 6 man canoes on saturday - with men's, women's, mixed and a novice race.
Sunday's small boat races at the same venue saw only slightly smaller wave conditions. "On a scale of 1 to 10, if saturday was an 11, sunday was a 10 - meaning it was big, but not scare the pants off you big for being out there in a one-man canoe", said Don Mulhall. Mulhall placed 2nd in the Senior Masters division with a time of 1 hour 2 minutes and 12 seconds, with only 11 seconds separating the top 3 finishers in the category. With 77 small boats on the start line for the race, the fastest time of the day was set by Shane Martin of Vancouver at 58:03.

Duel in the Desert May 9, 10, 2009 a big success!
For the first time in 11 years, the organizers of the Duel in the Desert Outrigger Canoe Races didn't get the usual unpredictable wind. "The weather was absolutely beautiful. We actually felt like apologizing for the perfect conditions", joked organizer Launa Maundrell. "It seems to have become a bit of a tradition for the first of our big canoe races that we have incredible wind, completely opposite of the forecast". A lot of the athletes attending, from as far away as the Lower Mainland and Calgary, came hoping for rougher water conditions as the boats are designed to handle open ocean conditions. The weekend's races were part of the Canadian Outrigger Racing Association's "CORA Cup Race Series".
There were 29 crews on the start line for Saturday's 6-person canoe races. False Creek Canoe Club's (FCRCC) men's crew had the fastest time of the day at 1 hour 15 minutes and 55 seconds over the approx. 15 km course. FCRCC women won the women's race with a time of 1:30:02, and Lotus Canoe Club from Vancouver took top mixed crew in 1:23:03. A Penticton women's crew placed 3rd overall with a time of 1:34:18. An Okanagan men's crew came second at 1:19:08. Penticton Racing Canoe Club had a record 5 crews racing throughout the day.
Sunday's 10 km small boat races saw mirror-flat water conditions for both the women's/novice and the men's/mixed races. Another attendance record was broken with 59 boats starting. Top female was Kimberley Amundson (FCRCC) at 59 minutes, 16 seconds; top male was Shane Martin (FCRCC) at 53:48. Tina Hoeben of Penticton won the women's Senior Master division, and was second overall at 1:03:23. Don Mulhall of Penticton won the Senior Master Division and was 6th overall at 55:29. Other local participants included: Launa Maundrell and Brent Tibben 54:59; Ron Pronger 58:19; Brad Lee 59:34; Kathryn Ginther 1:06:40. Novice Short Course: Bobby Harling and Kelsey Jenner 31:34; Nick Swanson and Julia Veidt 34:08; Brian MacPhail 34:14; Wayne Still 38:05; Daylon Tilitzky 38:12; Bev Boden 39:29
